While shopping for various door hardware, here is some basic info that you may need to know.

• You must ensure the hardware will function with the thickness of the door. A thickness of about 1⅜” is standard for any interior doors, while 1¾” is standard for any exterior doors.
• Also, note the borehole size needed for hardware, the hole diameter in your door. Your replacement hardware must fit your door, also the hardware for any new door needs a hole saw of the right size.
• In case you are shopping for any replacement hardware, then check your required backset. This will be the distance from your door edge to the center of your borehole.
• Typically, any deadbolts must have a borehole of 1½” or 2⅛” in diameter. Usually, handle sets and levers require a hole of 2⅛” diameter. The most common will be 2⅜” and 2¾”, but some hardware will fit on multiple back sets. Ensure that whatever hardware that you choose will fit on your door.
• Take note of the lock or bolt arrangement. A plate surrounds the bolt or latches on the door edge in round-corner and square-corner variants. There is no plate on hardware with a drive-in design.
• Installation is made easier by purchasing a certain replacement lockset, which matches the current arrangement. Hardware that can work with multiple setups is also available.
• Ensure that the hardware is appropriate for the job. Exterior door security is provided by entry hardware. The basic lock on privacy hardware is used on bathroom and bedroom doors.
• Passage hardware is suitable for your interior doors that do not require locks, such as a family room or closet doors. Dummy hardware can be used as lever or knob pulls on your interior doors that do not require functioning hardware, or it can be used to match operational hardware on your double doors.
• Look at the security grade of your entry door lock, called a lockset. Three levels are defined by the ANSI. The highest grade is grade one. Grade 2 security is intermediate, whereas Grade 3 security is basic.
• Multiple entrance door locks may usually be set to work with the same key. You however cannot do so with different manufacturers of locks. You can configure a lock using do-it-yourself rekeying without removing your hardware from your door.
• If you have misplaced a key and like to make sure it cannot be used to get access to the home, this option can be useful.

Picking, prying, bumping, and drilling are all ways to beat an entry lock, therefore look for designs that will resist these methods.
